What's happening at Bristol Hotrods

December 2010

Merry Christmas to all rodders, racers and readers!

Chris and Claire wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The European Street Rod Nationals are held in a different country each year, and Belgium is the host for 2011 - visit their web site for details..

Please note that the dates for the FOOTMAN JAMES 32ND BRISTOL CLASSIC CAR SHOW have been changed and the show will now take place on SATURDAY 16TH & SUNDAY 17TH APRIL which is 2 weeks earlier. This also means that the event now coincides with the FBHVC "Drive It Day" on the Sunday, and classic vehicle owners will be encouraged to celebrate this day by driving to the show.

Bristol's oldest hotrod? And was Rob Davies the first to fit a HA Viva front end under a rod? Phil discovers this 1970 Hot Car article on Rob's '32 Austin.

Missing for so many years, Bob Welstead's Moulin Rouge has finally re-appeared. Apart from a few body mods, it still looks the same and is a credit to all who have owned her since 1977.

Congratulations to Bristol drag racer 'Crazy' Chris Hartnell who celebrated his 50th Birthday recently. A surprise party was held at The Parkway, Stoke Gifford, with a 'red' theme - Neil and Carol getting special t-shirts made up for the event!

Have you seen this car?
Paul Farmer is looking for a car that used to belong to his late father. He sold it to Wendy Talbot who raced it for a few years, then it was sold to Phil Stubbs who he believes might live in the Bristol area. The first pic shows how it was when his father had it, and the second one is how it was when raced by Wendy. If you can provide any history on the car, or know its whereabouts, please let us know via email. Paul would like to try to buy the car back and restore it to how it was when his father owned and raced it.

NSRA and Bristol Hotrods at Prescott Hill Climb - 3rd October
Prescott's 'Autumn Classic' event is on the 2nd and 3rd October 2010, and consists of competition on the hill, plus trade stands, club stands, an autojumble and various other attractions. This year they are having an American theme for the event, and Bristol Hot Rods have been invited on the Sunday. The NSRA have been separately invited, so they will be making this event their annual NSRA pre-49 day out. Club areas will be set aside for the NSRA and Bristol Hotrods. Looks like there will be plenty there to interest everybody!

Prescott is situated 5 miles north east of Cheltenham off the A435 Evesham Road.

Jan 2010

Now xmas has passed and the new year is upon us we should all be planning this years events. With all the bad weather the past couple of weeks have bestowed upon us I was surprised to hear that Paul Quick did take his newly MOT'd 'T' out over the seasonal break. With a couple of runs under his belt he's now put it back in his garage to do a few odd jobs ready for the coming season.

In December's news we put a picture of a model A being built and asked if anyone could place the vehicle. The rod in progress belongs to Mel Thomas and has been in build for approx 28 years? Many of us older locals will remember his progress with it sharing the same garage as brother Phil's 3-window build. More pics and info on Mel's build will be added soon.

This years events are coming in fast, and for anyone who wants to use their car this year here are a few in progress:
- Classics at the castle, an event held in the wonderful Sherbourne Castle grounds.
- Our yearly run to Haynes museum, and also another show - The Extreme Wheels show also being held down at the Haynes museum.
- For those into soul / Tamala Motown a live music weekender at Dartmouth, where we have been invited to display some cars. This I am really looking forward to as this was the music of my youth.
- Castle Combe motor circuit would also like us to display again at one of their events, dates still to be arranged.

As we are only a couple of weeks into the year, this gives us all something to look forward to, and I'm sure more will follow.

New cars to hit the roads this year... there are three steel model B's, all packing huge engines, two roadsters, and one five window. Details will be released when the owners allow. Hopefully the two '36 roadsters will be out, as I said this year should be special so let's hope the weather will allow us to use our rides.

We've had an e-mail from an evening Post reporter who was asking if we had any events January / February for a feature.. this still has to be arranged, as we'll need good weather.

I hope you all liked the write up in the Gasser about last years Pegasus Castle Combe event, I think Ian's write up did us proud.

We've had an email from our friend Tony Smith of the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club, who passes on his regards, and reminds us that more photos of Bristol Hot Rods at the Castle Combe Track Day can be seen on the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club web site: 2009 Track Day Gallery

Details of the Track Day are here Castle Combe Track Day
and you can check out the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club by clicking the link on the right..
Travelling back in time for this old photo.. up the pole is Paul Domini, Mike Taylor & Neil Grant, whilst standing in the crowd is Mike Walters. Can anyone tell us who the other face is up the pole? Agh.. those were the days..
